Through various city planning processes, and in particular, the Master Plan process, the citizens of Grand Rapids, Mich. created a vision; a vision for sustainability and growth in the city in which they want to live, work, and play. The City of Grand Rapids' Sustainability Vision Statement includes Service and Operational themes that encompass the range of services and programs provided by the city. Each theme includes a series of outcomes that further define the anticipated goals of city services.

These goals include:

1) Balanced transportation - improving the safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of movement and travel of people and commerce;

2) Balanced nature - maintaining and protecting the natural resources, health and welfare of the people in Grand Rapids and maintaining compliance with Federal, State and local requirements in the treatment and distribution of potable water;

3) Enriched lives - maintaining city parks and recreational facilities and green spaces; and

4) Great neighborhoods - improving housing and yard conditions.
