Eureka has, for many years, concentrated effort on historical preservation, stormwater management, and pedestrian and bicycling-based traffic control systems. The city has developed a detailed timeline for its goals, much centered around community development, to make the city more sustainable for the future.
The city has created a walkable downtown area with less dependency on vehicle use with community planning and pursuit of grants for bicycle, pedestrian and transit improvement projects. The city promotes and encourages alternative transportation to work, school, and elsewhere.
Eureka has been implementing best practices involving its Stormwater Division to better protect the quality of water in the city, and in turn helping the natural environment around them. The Stormwater Division is responsible for reducing the discharge of pollutants as well as educating all city departments in maintaining compliance with laws governing stormwater runoff. Local training courses on stormwater management are available to anyone.
