It might not look like your typical roundabout, but this "dual teardrop" roundabout interchange built in 2010 is the latest interchange design used by engineers in Carmel, Ind., a city of 80,000 that now has 67 roundabouts and 16 more in development. Key features include depression of the parkway 20 feet below the corridor crossing, allowing for improved connectivity for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Carmel credits its roundabouts with reducing crashes, traffic delays and operating expenses.
