Grant Description: Communities Putting Prevention to Work WeTHRIVE! Community Wellness in Action Hamilton County, Ohio .
The Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) initiative will create county wide policy and environmental change to support healthy eating, physical activity and the reduction of obesity.
Hamilton County, Ohio is located in the southwest corner of the state and is home to 851,494 residents. The CPPW initiative will build upon existing leadership and local efforts to create communities where the healthy choice is the easy choice.
Project strategies include: a hard-hitting social marketing campaign to promote healthy eating and physical activity, improved access to healthy options through implementation of school based vending policies and community garden development, and improved access to safe spaces for physical activity through school to community shared used agreements and policies to support 30 minutes of physical activity in after school programs
Additional key strategies include expanding the utilization of existing subsidies for community recreation, GIS mapping of healthy eating and physical activity resources, and expansion of infrastructure for faith-based health ministries to provide social support for change.
The Hamilton County initiative will also expand on existing BMI surveillance efforts. Hamilton County is uniquely positioned to significantly advance healthy eating, physical activity and obesity reduction efforts in our communities through the alignment of state and local plans, leveraging of diverse, multi-year funding sources, strong community participation, and existing political will.
