Benedict, Ph.D. This course will help you assess the environmental, economic and social impacts of materials and processes across their entire life cycles to produce the most sustainable outcomes. Pragmatic and reliable methods for assessing sustainability remain difficult for many organizations. Further, understanding the three elements of sustainability over the full life cycle of products and processes is essential. In many cases, understanding environmental issues is the easiest area, while economic and social issues are less well understood. This course is intended to provide frameworks for reviewing all three areas and enabling not only full coverage but understanding balancing and interactions between the elements. These frameworks will be described so as to facilitate development of ways to help decision makers present proposals and illustrate results.

Those who complete this course will better understand linkages between the three elements of sustainability and ways to analyze them. They will also be able to illustrate these findings to both expert and non-expert audiences.

OUR INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Barry A. Benedict, Ph.D., has had a long and distinguished career in academic leadership and has been on faculties at both public and private institutions. He has been affiliated with the University of Texas at El Paso since 2003, most recently as professor of mechanical engineering. His teaching is primarily at the doctoral level in the Environmental Science and Engineering Ph.D. Program (and Energy Science and Engineering track). His research currently is in innovation (including frugal innovation), interdisciplinarity, policy analysis, life cycle assessment, scenario planning, diffusion of innovation, sustainability and educational approaches. He earned his bachelors, masters and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering at the University of Florida.
