Madison, Wisconsin

Madison was named the capital of Wisconsin in 1836, even though the town only existed on paper. It was laid out with streets named for each of the 39 signers of the U.S. Constitution, its thoroughfares converging on the capitol building in the center of an isthmus between two lakes.
