DELAND, Fla. -- Florida Hospital DeLand recently provided free sports physicals to more than 230 student-athletes at DeLand High School.

Together, a team of 11 local health care providers, 20 Florida Hospital DeLand employees, and 20 Herzing University nursing students volunteered their time and talents to provide free sports physicals for the local student-athletes.

"We love our community and want to support the families here," said Dr. Kris Gray, Florida Hospital DeLand chief medical officer. "We are honored to provide this service. It allows each student to get a cost-effective physical to enable them to play sports, while also raising funds to benefit the DeLand High School athletic program."

While the hospital provided the sports physicals free of charge, DeLand High School did ask families for a $10 donation to help equip the school's sports medicine department. Collectively, the students raised $1,600 during this event.

The annual event was sponsored by Florida Orthopaedics and Florida Hospital DeLand.

"We truly thank the physicians, volunteers and sponsors. Without them, this would not have been possible," said Paul Ryder, DeLand High School athletic director. "Together we are helping to make sure our athletes are properly cleared and safe before they participate in another year of sports."
