AKRON, Ohio -- A partnership between public and private-sector organizations, including the city of Akron and Summit County, has launched a county-wide awards program that will showcase the best examples of commercial energy efficiency, waste reduction and involvement of employees.

The Summit of Sustainability Awards program will accept award applications in three categories - large employers, small employers and non-profits. The program will culminate in an awards luncheon Oct. 25. Keynote speaker will be Elaine Gallagher Adams, AIA, a senior consultant with the buildings program at the Rocky Mountain Institute.

Organizers say the program is about helping Summit County communities save energy and money, create more transportation choices, preserve clean air and bring economic prosperity in the process. The program hopes to reveal best sustainable business practices going on in the Arkron area that can be showcased for others to emulate.

Founding member organizations include the city of Akron, Summit County, Keep Akron Beautiful, Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce and the Summit Akron Solid Waste Management Authority.
