In a recent study in Madison, Wis., the U.S. Geological Survey configured equivalent rain garden cells that were planted with regular turf grass (far cell) and native prairie grasses. Each cell received the same amount of rainwater coming off of a roof. Because of its longer roots, the prairie grass outperformed the turf in the clay soils.
